Education: FETC and TCEA
Education technology, including Internet safety and keeping students on-task, took center stage in Florida and Texas this winter. Teachers, administrators and district technology experts gathered at FETC 2008 in Orlando, Florida and TCEA in Austin, Texas to learn about the latest in digital collaboration, Web 2.0 and network security. Hundreds of interested attendees stopped by SpectorSoft's booths to learn how Spector 360 can help them fight the growing use of proxy servers by students to bypass school filters and firewalls. A growing trend of interest is Spector 360's ability to provide monitoring and filtering for student and staff laptops used in school and then taken off the campus network as part of 1-to-1 laptop programs.

Spector 360: The Power of Aggregate Reports
The Spector 360 Dashboard provides flexible Aggregate Reports that put you in control of summarizing data from across your network -- exactly as you wish. An Aggregate Report is provided in nearly every folder in the Dashboard Reports tool. To modify the Network Activity Aggregates Report, for example, right-click on it and select Settings.
• Select Grouping to reorganize the hierarchy of the data groupings, or remove groups and "flatten" the report. Report A has all data groups removed except the Events. Report B groups data by Port, Program, and Date.
• Select Fields to specify the data shown in the report's columns. The first field in Report A is Domains, while in Report B it is Date.
Whatever totals you'd like to see, you can arrange to display them in Aggregate Reports.
Spector 360, Spector CNE, and Spector Pro: Watch a Day in the Life of …
Reports are valuable, but there's nothing quite like sitting back and watching a minute-by-minute photographic replay of activity in a day of the life of a computer or computer user. Screen snapshot movies show in real time how a person works, where they search for information, and when they go to Facebook or to a sports site on a given day. By watching work patterns in motion, you can make better decisions about resources, training, and employment.
Screen snapshot movies are available in Spector 360, Spector CNE, and in Spector Pro from within the Snapshot viewer, but it's also possible to make a "movie" that runs independently from the product:
1. Select the computer or user you wish to watch.
2. Refresh, or set criteria, to a reasonable date range. Keep in mind, a full day's work can result in more than 600 snapshots. A good date selection might be "Yesterday."
3. To Save the movie for others to review, click the Save button at the top of the Snapshot Viewer (or Select File > Save As).
4. In the Save Snapshots dialog box, select Video.
5. Click OK to save the movie in .AVI format. The default .avi file named with today's date is directed to the "My Documents" for your user login.
6. To play your movie, simply navigate to the .avi file and double-click it to play it in the default media player.
Movie too long? Go back into the Snapshot Viewer and note a range of the most interesting Snapshot Frames. Click Save, select the range and save the video again.
Spector Pro: Email Overload – Finding What Counts
Today's continually increasing volume of email used for marketing, business, and personal correspondence can make monitoring employee communication seem overwhelming. There's no way to read it all. The following tips make the job easier:
Set Up Keyword Alerts
If you simply don't have time to look at the data, set alerts that will notify you immediately (by email) when someone types the word "guns" or a competitor's domain within an email. The people involved are instantly revealed in the alert. You'll know exactly where to go in the data (who, what, when) to further investigate.Search Email Activity for Keywords
If you record ALL the data, you can search it all when an issue arises. For example, if you are concerned about Bob buying guns, use the Spector Pro Search function in Email Activity, entering "Bob guns." Spector Pro will find all occasions where the words appear, in the to address, from address, subject, and body of the email.Use Email Filtering
You don't have to record ALL the data. Email Filtering is provided with Email Settings (under the Filter button). It allows you to filter out email that is not suspicious (such as HR memos, your own memos, favorite newsletters, etc.) OR focus ONLY on email that is suspicious (containing the word "guns," or directed to users at a competitor's domain).
