From the Trenches: Reseller Report

A reseller to major financial firms, Secure Electronic Communications Compliance Archive System (SECCAS) in Manhattan, New York, needed a component to monitor and archive Instant Messaging (IM) to complete their software solution. They chose SpectorSoft based on its power, reliability, and ease of use. In turn, SpectorSoft worked closely with SECCAS to customize the software to perform as an integrated and cost-effective component. “For clients who need IM, SpectorSoft is an important part of the package and the sales process,” says SECCAS President, Daniel F. Summa. “In the financial community, rules state that if you are not able to record and archive chat and IM, you are not able to use that utility. SpectorSoft software adds value to our core service. It’s a must-have to meet customer’s needs for archiving IM.”

Meet SpectorSoft

Meet: Jody Detzel, Vice President of Sales
Background:SpectorSoft welcomed Jody Detzel in March of 2007. Raised in the Cincinnati area, Jody comes from over 10 years at Microsoft, where his last position was Practice Manager in Chicago with responsibility for all enterprise services for three states. As Partner Account Manager for Microsoft, he became experienced with both sides of the partner relationship. “Microsoft is very partner-centric. Fully 90% of our revenues came through partners. I would love to see that type of partner centricity for SpectorSoft as well, and am taking on a goal to increase our revenue through partners by 30% by the end of this calendar year.”
Changes: “Moving from a company with 70 thousand employees to one just topping 70 is a thousand times different. For me the appeal is in moving to a company closer to startup where it’s possible to move quickly, be creative, and have a bigger impact on the market.”
Mission: “My goal is to mature, grow, and bring consistency to our Sales and Channel efforts, as well as increase the SpectorSoft presence in the Enterprise space.”

Meet: Sean Coakley, Channel Account Manager

He brings a strong channel background to this new position, having formerly worked at MicroWarehouse and CDW as an Account Executive.
Changes: “I’m very excited to once again be working in the Channel segment. Because I understand exactly what the reseller requires from a vendor in order to close the sale and maintain that customer satisfaction, I want to increase the support, knowledge level and working relationship we have with all our valued Partners.”
Mission: “My overall goal is to increase Partner satisfaction levels in the areas of training, sales, service and support through more consistent , professional and meaningful Partner tools and programs.”

In each issue we will introduce you to key members of the SpectorSoft team and one of your many partners at SpectorSoft.

Trade Show Report

CESSpector 360 Demos Draw Big Crowds at Interop Las Vegas
SpectorSoft performed live demos for hundreds of people at the Interop 2007 Las Vegas in May. The crowds were really amazed when they actually saw the powerful, centralized features of 360 and as a result, our Partner sales have been pouring in – some even while the show was still in progress! The demos were made even more fun with drawings for Spector Pro and iPods.

Who's Talking about Us?

Monitoring is a red hot topic, which makes it hot for sales and means that SpectorSoft turns up frequently in the news.

Chicago TribuneChicago Tribune, “Employers watching your every online move,”
by Eric Benderoff, March 12, 2007.
If you watched the games from your office computer, you better hope the boss likes hoops too. Because if you think the “boss button” on the CBS SportsLine Web site that hosts the games kept your viewing a secret as he or she walked by, you are sorely mistaken. In 2006, sales to business customers of SpectorSoft software to monitor workplace Web access increased 50 percent.

the Seattle TimesSeattle Times, “March Madness? Your boss might be watching you,”
by Kristi Heim, March 15, 2007.
During March Madness, some worried 19 days of distraction would drive employers mad. But now employers have their own technology arsenal, and were prepared to use it. “A couple of things get employers interested: loss of productivity in general, and a lot of employees spending a certain percentage of time each day on non-work related Web sites,” says Douglas Fowler, president of SpectorSoft.

Legal TechLegal Tech Newsletter “Shield Your Firm from Cybercrime,” (www.law.com) by Christy Burke, April 2, 2007.
If your firm suspects that a lawyer, or group of lawyers, is getting ready to leave the firm, the network administrator can cut off their access to documents immediately and products such as SpectorSoft can be silently installed on the user’s PC. This software can log which files have been opened or copied, and record what’s been typed on the keyboard.

Wall Street JournalWall Street Journal, “Keeping Tabs on the Kids,”
by Kelli B. Grant, March 25, 2007. “Computer monitoring software can be the most intrusive way to monitor your kids -- but also the best protection,” says Parry Aftab, a New York-based Internet privacy lawyer and head of WiredSafety, a group that educates children on the safe use of technology. Software keeps track of everything your child (or any other computer user) does. Of the programs available, one of the most effective is SpectorSoft Software.

Tech Tips

SpectorPro and the SpectorSoft network products provide blocking of Chat and IM by contact name. You do not have to shut down Yahoo Instant Messenger (as an example) altogether. You can limit messaging to include ONLY authorized contacts or specifically block inappropriate contacts that have been observed during monitoring. Messages to and from the named contacts are never sent or received. The Block Chat/IM option is provided in the Settings or Client Settings. See the Spector 360 or Spector CNE Administrator’s Guide for more information.

techtipsWith the latest Spector 360 and Spector CNE upgrades, you can install the Client recorder “in batch.” As soon as network computers are visible in the Control Center’s Manage Computers view, right-click and select All Tasks > Computer Batch Install Wizard. Follow the onscreen prompts to select any or all computers to receive the remote Client installation. See the Spector 360 Administrator’s Guide for more information.

techtipsSpector 360 offers a simple Application Programming Interface (API) that allows advanced users to programmatically “hook into” the SQL database via stored procedures. This allows you to harness Spector 360 data for use in other productivity and network data reports. You can also create videos from selected Snapshot data. The API information you need to get started is provided in a Spector 360 Administrator’s Guide section called “Developer Tools.”
